B-BBEE Overview

The B-BBEE scorecard is designed to assess a company’s contribution to economic transformation across five key elements. Companies can achieve a maximum total of 130 points by integrating best practices in each area. Below is a detailed breakdown of the points allocation for each element:

Ownership

Purpose: To drive significant Black ownership, thereby redistributing economic power and promoting wealth inclusion.
Focus: Companies are evaluated on the extent of Black equity participation. Higher scores are awarded for higher levels of Black ownership, reflecting a stronger commitment to empowerment.

Management Control

Purpose: To ensure inclusive representation in leadership and decision-making roles.
Focus: This element assesses the proportion of Black individuals in senior management and board positions. A robust score here demonstrates a commitment to diversity at the highest levels of corporate governance.

Skills Development

Purpose: To enhance the capabilities of Black employees through targeted training and capacity-building initiatives.
Focus: Companies earn points by investing in programmes that develop skills, promote career advancement, and contribute to long-term socio-economic growth.

Procurement, Enterprise & Supplier Development

Purpose: To integrate Black-owned enterprises into the supply chain and promote their sustainable growth.
Focus: This section measures preferential procurement practices, mentorship, and support for developing Black suppliers and service providers. It aims to create lasting partnerships that boost market participation for historically disadvantaged businesses.

Socio-Economic Developement

Purpose: To drive community upliftment and broader societal progress through strategic investments.
Focus: Points are awarded for initiatives that benefit communities, such as investments in education, healthcare, and social infrastructure. This element ensures that corporate success translates into tangible socio-economic benefits.

B-BBEE Levels and Required Points

Based on the cumulative score out of 120, companies are classified into the following levels:

  • Level One Contributor: in excess of 99.99 points
    Recognition: 135%
  • Level Two Contributor: 95 to 99.99 points
    Recognition: 125%
  • Level Three Contributor: 90 to 94.99 points
    Recognition: 110%
  • Level Four Contributor: 80 to 89.99 points
    Recognition: 100%
  • Level Five Contributor: 75 to 79.99 points
    Recognition: 80%
  • Level Six Contributor: 70 to 74.99 points
    Recognition: 60%
  • Level Seven Contributor: 55 to 69.99 points
    Recognition: 50%
  • Level Eight Contributor: 40 to 54.99 points
    Recognition: 10%
  • Non Compliant Contributor: 0 to 39.99 points
    Recognition: 0%
